Stop Dog Barking

Stop Dog Barking - how to stop dog barking - Dog Training Conventional Methods.

Instruction:

Barking is the ‘default’ mode of communication and expression for dogs, apart from howling and whining. However, ceaseless barking can be a headache for dog owners and a sign of an underlying dog behavior problem. In such a scenario, it becomes imperative to stop dog barking the right way and as soon as possible, and get an insight into why dogs bark in the first place.

Dogs bark for myriad reasons, and certain breeds bark more often than others. In fact, a dog has different barks that are distinguishable if you listen closely. The key to stop dog barking if it has become a nuisance is to understand why your dog is barking so much so that you can zero in on the underlying cause, which can be one of the following:

  • Apprehension: Barking in the case of anxiety is often a sign of a dog’s need to soothe or calm itself down. This is prevalent in the case of separation anxiety, a common dog behavior issue. Anxiety-ridden barking is mostly high pitched and accompanied by a significant degree of whining.
  • Boredom: Many dogs bark when they are bored just to hear themselves. This can be a sad situation, since it is a reflection of the dog’s loneliness or need for company.
  • Need for attention
  • Playfulness: Playful barking is commonplace in pups and sounds upbeat. Adult dogs may also sometimes indulge in playful barking prior to going out for a walk or before playtime.
  • To warn you: It is very natural for a dog to start barking when there is someone at the door, or if there is a stranger on familiar property. There is no need to stop dog barking in this case unless the barking becomes intolerable and translates into aggression. Barking as a sign of warning or an alert is usually authoritative and loud.
  • Communication with other dogs: This often takes the form of cacophony when one dog starts barking on the street or block and other dogs in the area join in.

How to stop dog barking: Handy pointers

Once you are done pinpointing the exact cause of your dog’s excessive barking, you can follow these tips below to rectify the situation:

  • Never leave your dog alone for long periods of time, especially if you are out most of the day. Dogs are social creatures, and if your pet keeps barking the whole day at home, your neighbors or those in your locality would find it a nuisance or even call animal welfare. Undertake crate training, leave the radio on, or find a pet sitter who can at least come over for a few hours to give your pooch company.
  • Do not reward your dog or shower affection if it is barking for attention. Ignore it instead.
  • If your dog is barking, attract its attention by clapping or whistling and redirect its attention toward something that is rewarding and productive, such as a treat, toy, or going out to exercise.

If you are unable to stop dog barking despite the above measures, consult an animal behaviorist or professional dog trainer to resolve the issue.
